RHS Silver Award Winners with ‘The Redshift’ Garden – The Malvern Show 2019
Location – Malvern Three Counties Show Ground
Price – Sponsorship
Timescale – 7 days
In May this year, we had the pleasure of working alongside Rockhopper Garden Design at the RHS Malvern Show.
Designing and constructing a show garden was something neither us nor Julie (RGD) had been a part of before and so needless to say we were all very excited and ready for the long drive up to the Three Counties Showground.
With the help of our sponsor, the Institute of Physics, Julie designed ‘The Red shift’ garden to celebrate how telescopes have helped us to develop an understanding of our universe.
The beginning stages of the build included setting and marking out within our allocated patch at the showground and laying the concrete base for the ‘Earth’ section, of the garden.
This centre piece comprised an outstanding quote panel by Stark and Greensmith and an impressive sculpture by Julie Grose Metal Design.
We also installed beautiful oak benches by Factory Furniture and Sandstone Cobbles by London Stone; all of which was complemented by a fabulous array of planting and colourful flowers.
Just before the show welcomes it’s visitors, the garden entrees are judged and critiqued and we were proudly awarded a Silver Medal for The Redshift. All of us worked extremely hard on this project and were over the moon with the finished garden.

Traditional Garden Design and Build – East Hagbourne, Oxfordshire
A traditional garden build
- Location – East Hagbourne, Oxfordshire
- Budget – £10,000+
- Timescale – 3 weeks
In the summer of 2018 we completed a beautiful garden in East Hagbourne, in time to be showcased at the open garden event in the village.
The client requested the garden be easy to maintain, whilst not too minimalistic but also most importantly tie in with the large existing wall surrounding the space. Jack designed the entire garden and the team built it within 3 weeks to an excellent standard.
The garden required quite a bit of clearance initially, including removing an old glass greenhouse and allotments.
Once the space was cleared the work commenced. The largest area of patio comprised Citron Limestone paving and the feature bricks within the patio and the wall were Reclaimed Wire Cut bricks.
Surrounding the patio were some raised and floor based flower beds and decorative wooden fencing. This created the perfect screen between the existing out house building and the new garden.
The main focus point of the garden was the water feature, built using the reclaimed bricks. The finished product was superb and exactly as Jack and the client had envisaged.
Also incorporated into Jack’s design were two custom built oak furniture pieces by J. Drewe Landscaping; enabling the client to sit out on a warm day and enjoy their new outdoor room.
We were all delighted with the end result of this pleasant build and the customer’s proudly opened the garden for the event in the village that weekend.

New Build Garden Transformation – Oxford
- Location – Oxford
- Budget – £20,000+
- Timescale – 3 weeks
Working with a new build garden is always a pleasure, as the space rarely requires more than a quick clear out.
This garden for a new build three storey home was designed by Sarah Naybour and took approximately three weeks to complete.
The initial stages of this project involved organising the different garden levels and preparing the base for the raised beds and the patio. The paving used is Black Granite from Hard Scape. Sometimes a dark paving can be overpowering in a smaller garden, but here it worked fantastically. Sarah and the client envisaged the garden to be an extension of their home, with the patio doors from the kitchen diner opening out onto an outdoor calm oasis.
The garden also features white rendered raised beds containing tropical plants and palm trees. The beds were one of the harder elements of the garden to complete but they proved worth it once they were finished.
The artificial grass used is Easigrass Mayfair. The space covered in grass cleverly allowed all of the plants to suit the space, including the more traditional trees used.
The screening surrounding the garden is painted softwood. The subtle grey colour further adds to the modern and sophisticated feel of the space.
Finally, we had a superb selection of lights installed which compliment the garden beautifully and allows the client to continue to enjoy the garden long into a summer’s evening.

New Build Garden Makeover – Thame, Oxfordshire
- Location – Thame, Oxfordshire
- Budget – £60,000+
- Timescale – 10 weeks
Summer 2018; New Build Garden Makeover in Oxford.
In November 2017 we were contacted by a client who had recently purchased a new build home in Thame, Oxfordshire. Their large garden was a blank canvas of turf and basic paving and they desperately wanted the space to reflect the interior of their stylish new property.
New Build Garden Makeover – Designs and Plans
Having sought a designer of their own, we were provided with the plans and drawings and asked for a quotation.
The design was created by the impressive and reputable Garden Designer Richard Key and we were excited to explore the drawings and learn more about the vision he had in mind for this space.
The new garden would incorporate tropical planting supplied by Folia, a trendy and relaxing seating area, lawn edged with metal edgings, a variety of paving and an imaginative play area for the younger residents at this home. We were also asked to create a lighting plan for the garden too.
Creating the New Garden – The Process
Once underway, the initial stages of the garden involved striping the existing lawn and paving back to a muddy surface.
The team then began to lay the patio and construct the rendered wall, which created the perfect back drop for the seating area.
We used a Drone which proved extremely useful in taking some birds eye view shots of the work in progress.
The garden featured lots of other quirky items such as this drainage grate by Lateral Design. It is always useful for the team to work with new products and materials.
The main paving used within the garden is London Stone, Khaki and the paving featured in the pathway is Bradstone, Madera Porcelain.
Whilst the majority of the garden is on one level, there are also steps which run down to a lower path at the side of the house.
The garden also comprised Cedar screening and a sunken trampoline for the children. The play area also has recycled rubber chippings from Monster Mulch, which creates the perfect soft surface for outdoor play.
The lighting we designed compliments the screening wonderfully and creates the perfect nighttime ambiance.
The elegant lighting around the seating area finished the garden beautifully and created an aesthetic exactly as the client desired.
The End Result
We all thoroughly enjoyed building this exceptional New Build Garden in Oxfordshire. The photos show what a beautiful space it now is. We look forward to working alongside Richard on many projects in the future.

New Build Garden Makeovers from J Drewe
Working on new build gardens is always exciting. We often find that they start of as blank canvases so the designs could take them anywhere.
If you have a new build and want to discuss creating your dream garden, then contact the team at J Drewe today.
Garden Lighting
The lighting you choose for your garden is a vital component for any finished space. The mood, ambiance and decor is set by the lights in your new outdoor home. Our recent project in Thame was no different. This new build home was desperate for a slick, stylish but playful garden for both its owners and their children to enjoy. The garden itself was designed by Richard Key and Jack set out the lighting plan. A lot of thought and organisation goes into the layout of the lights; with consideration needed for the location of each bulb and the effect it will have on the wider picture. We wanted to share some night images from this project with you as we are beyond happy with the end result, as are our customers who have been a pleasure to work for.
Our new J. Drewe Landscaping Ltd. Logo
We have decided it is time for a little rebranding! Jack first decided on our logo nearly 6 years ago when he founded J. Drewe Landscaping.
However, with the introduction of our new Marketing Manager, we thought we would let take her take reins and tweak our logo to be new and unique!
We think she has done a wonderful job – the new logo looks sophisticated and bold. It suits our fleet wonderfully and we are currently in the process of updating all literature; including business cards and flyers, our website and uniforms.
Keep an eye out for one of our vans passing you soon!

Christmas Reflecting on 2017
How is it going to be Christmas Day 3 days from now! Time flies when you are having a good year! With Christmas fast approaching and just before we close ourselves down for the holidays, we thought it would be nice to reflect on what a year 2017 has been for J. Drewe Landscaping.
The most momentous thing to happen to us was by far the transition from Sole Trader to Limited Company. J. Drewe Landscaping was founded by Jack some five years ago, when he had a handful of small maintenance jobs and one landscaping team. Since then it has moved from strength to strength. Now with over 12 employees comprising multiple landscaping teams, maintenance and office staff, 2018 is set to be even more exciting than last year. The move to Limited is vastly important to our business today and our clients. We now have the capacity to build complex, highly detailed gardens and maintain the largest of landscapes in locations throughout the South of England.
In other exciting news!
As we’d hoped, we have continued our grounds maintenance in London for a renowned housing developer in Mill Hill. The builder completed the work earlier this year and whilst we worked directly for them; once the site was finished and handed to the Management Company, the maintenance work would be out for tender. With our fantastic team of maintenance guys; their professionalism, knowledge and skills, we won the contract and look forward to caring for these beautiful grounds through 2018.
Some of our most favourite jobs of this year include:
- Stockwells, Aston – Project comprises an Oak Pool House and 500m2 of paving, swimming pool restoration and a new driveway.
- Colwell Drive, Oxford – Project comprised a complete overhaul of the patio area
- Courtyard garden, Wallingford – Job encompassed Bradstone paving
- Appleford Parish Council – After completing the patio area for the club house in 2016, we transformed the car park too
Our teams are very excited for our annual Christmas outing at Paint balling today too.
For now, we hope you’ve enjoyed following us this year, make sure you are subscribed to our newsletters and may you have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy new year!
Our goals for the new year:
- Become members of the Association of Professional Landscapers
- Build a new office for our two new office based staff
Watch this space!
Watch the team lay this Dove Limestone Paving with Bradstone Black Granite Setts
The team have been busy at work in Abingdon laying a 120m2 patio!
The main slabs are Dove Limestone and have been edged with Bradstone Black Granite Setts.
The job comprised us removing the outdated existing patio and replacing it with a new one. The client also wanted fantastic outdoor feature lighting to complete their new entertaining space, which we organised with Duncan Webb.
